Global deal activity down by 2% YoY during January-July 2025

Monday, August 25, 2025
Opalesque Industry Update - The global deal landscape (comprising mergers & acquisitions (M&A), private equity and venture financing deals) witnessed a notable shift in the first seven months of 2025, with data indicating a decline in overall deal volume compared to the same period in 2024. The total number of deals announced globally decreased by around 2% year-on-year (YoY), reflecting a challenging environment for deal-making, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

An analysis of GlobalData's Deals Database revealed that all the deal types under coverage registered a decline. For instance, M&A activity remained mostly stagnant, experiencing a slight decline of around 1% YoY during January-July 2025. Meanwhile, venture financing and private equity investments faced significant challenges. The number of venture financing deals announced globally fell by around 4% during January-July 2025 compared to January-July 2024, whereas private equity deal volume registered a decline of around 14% YoY.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: "The decline in deal activity and the fall in volume across all deal types suggests a cautious approach, possibly due to economic uncertainties and shifting market dynamics. However, while the overall decline is concerning, it is essential to recognize the resilience of certain regions and markets. The coming months will be critical in determining whether this decline is a temporary setback or indicative of a more prolonged downturn in global deal activity."

Regionally, the data reveals a varied landscape. North America has seen a decline of around 4% in deal volume, primarily driven by decreased activity in the US. Conversely, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has experienced an increase of about 3%, with countries like China, India, and Japan showing resilience in their deal-making activities. Europe, however, has faced a decline of around 4%, while Middle East and Africa, as well as the South and Central America regions also suffered YoY declines of around 10% and 9%, respectively.

Similarly, the trend across several key markets also remained a mixed bag, The US experienced a decline of around 3% in deal volume, while the UK and Canada have seen drop of around 5% and 11%, respectively. Bucking the trend, China, India and Japan recorded YoY increases of around 4%, 10% and 24%, respectively. This divergence underscores the importance of local market conditions and sector-specific dynamics in shaping deal activity.
