US VC funding surpasses $100bn mark in first 10 months of 2024

Thursday, November 21, 2024
Opalesque Industry Update - The total venture capital (VC) funding value in the US surpassed $100 billion mark during the first 10 months of 2024, solidifying the country's dominance in the global VC landscape. During this period, the US recorded $117.2 billion worth of VC funding deal announcements, reflecting a 17% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to the $100.2 billion raised during the same timeframe in 2023, reveals GlobalData.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: "What makes this even more noteworthy is that the total VC funding value improved despite a significant fall in deal volume. The US not only dominated but also outpaced peers by a substantial margin. This could be attributed to the several big-ticket VC deals announced in the US during the review period."

An analysis of GlobalData's Deals Database reveals that a total of 4,028 VC deals were announced in the US during January-October 2024, which is a YoY decline of 32.8% compared to the announcement of 5,993 VC deals during the same period in previous year.

Bose adds: "Even though the US dominated the global VC funding landscape both in terms of deal volume and value, it is more prevalent in terms of value."

The US accounted for 29.3% share of the total number of VC deals announced globally during January-October 2024 while its share in terms of the corresponding funding value stood at 53.5%.

Bose continues: "This could be attributed to the massive jump in the number of big-ticket deals announced during January-October 2024 compared to the same period in 2023."

The number of VC deals valued more than or equal to $100 million increased from 176 during January-October 2023 to 245 during January-October 2024. These include some billion-dollar deals announced in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

Some of the notable VC funding deals announced in the US during January-October 2024 include: $6.6 billion worth of funding raised by OpenAI, $6 billion raised by X.AI, $5.6 billion worth of funding raised by Waymo, $1.5 billion worth funding raised by Anduril Industries and $1.1 billion worth funding raised by CoreWeave, among others.
