Global deal activity down by 10.2% YoY during January-October 2024

Thursday, November 14, 2024
Opalesque Industry Update - A total of 41,452 deals (mergers & acquisitions (M&A), private equity and venture financing deals) were announced globally during January to October 2024, which represents a 10.2% year-on-year (YoY) decline compared to the 46,166 deals announced during the same period in previous year, according to GlobalData.

An analysis of GlobalData's Deals Database disclosed that the volume of M&A deals declined by 4.1% YoY during January-October 2024, whereas the number of private equity deals and venture financing deals declined 4.8% and 20.4%, respectively, compared to the deals volume during January-October 2023.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, Comments: "Global deal activity remained subdued owing to the economic volatility and geopolitical tensions. Notably, several major economies reported fall in deal volume. The ongoing conflicts across several parts of the world and uncertain economic conditions have significantly influenced deal-making sentiments."

The Asia-Pacific and Middle East and African regions experienced 4.8% and 3.9% YoY, respectively, during January-October 2024. On the other hand, North America, Europe and South and Central saw their respective deals volume fall by 13.9%, 10.8% and 20.1%, respectively.

Bose adds: "The improvements in deal volume observed in some of the Asia-Pacific and Middle East and African countries helped in mitigating the decline experienced in other countries within these regions."

Notable improvements in deal volume during January-October 2024 were observed in India (11.9%), Japan (23.1%), Australia (4.8%), and South Korea (1.8%) from the Asia-Pacific region, as well as the UAE (14%) and South Africa (16.7%) from the Middle East and African region.

Meanwhile, several major global economies, including the US, the UK, China, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden experienced YoY decline in deal volume by 13.1%, 2.8%, 22.9%, 20.4%, 15.7%, 23.9%, 8.5%, 16.6%, 17.6%, and 12.7%, respectively, during the January-October 2024 period.
