Marc Greenberg launches Greener Pastures to advise long/short funds

Monday, September 09, 2024
Opalesque Industry Update - Hedge fund research executive Marc Greenberg has launched Greener Pastures to advise long / short funds about how to optimise their research departments' and investment professionals' talent to improve firm performance.

Greenberg, formerly Director of Research and Professional Development of Point72 Asset Management and the creator of the revolutionary quantamental Point72 Idea Lab, says many firms exist to find talent, but no firms exist to advise the funds about how to grow the capabilities of their investment talent or maximise their research capabilities to produce successful, repeatable and sustainable investment processes.

Greenberg has also launched a Substack product, "The Long and the Short of It," to provide additional advice to supplement the work done by Greener Pastures.

"We look to help hedge funds managing $500 million to $3 billion get their research programs and investment talent to play their best games," Greenberg said. "The biggest firms have superb programs, but most firms don't have those capabilities. We want to help them level that playing field.

"Long/short funds manage billions of dollars in assets, and we believe that with our expertise, the firms without this capability can increase their performance," Greenberg continued. "This is important as firms wrestle with how to use AI and machine learning to augment their human capital. There doesn't appear to be anyone providing the services Greener Pastures offers; we believe we are the first to fill this need."

Greener Pastures offers three areas of expertise:

• Talent Management - Greener Pastures will help firms optimise their talent searches by identifying their talent gaps and creating a talent funnel. Greener Pastures isn't a search firm, but it will evaluate the outcome of firms' recruiting and establish clear career path trajectories.

• Professional Development - Greener Pastures will identify clients' potential top internal performers, key performance indicators, build core skills tools, promote best practices, create and monitor a review process, design a compensation system, and build career paths. By doing this, the firm will help funds avoid the pitfalls of failing to develop their talent and making expensive external hires.

• Research Management - Smaller funds often have no formalised research management process. Greener Pastures will help them manage research budgets and allocate resources. Greener Pastures will also evaluate existing processes to ensure Sell Side and alternative data relationships provide investment teams with the best possible signals for alpha.
