Sidely adds to private equity team with partners from Weil

Friday, March 31, 2023
Opalesque Industry Update - Sidley announced that James MacArthur has joined Sidley's global Energy, Transportation, and Infrastructure practice. Mr. MacArthur will shortly be joined by Ed Freeman. They will be based in our London office.

Messrs MacArthur and Freeman focus their global practice on private equity and infrastructure funds and join Sidley from Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP in London.

Mr. MacArthur has more than 20 years of experience acting for corporate and private equity sponsors on European and global deals across a wide range of sectors, including energy, digital infrastructure, logistics and transportation, social infrastructure, and sports. Mr. MacArthur advises a number of leading infrastructure funds and is ranked as a Leading Lawyer for Infrastructure in both Chambers UK and Legal 500 UK.

Mr. Freeman's practice covers cross-border private equity and M&A transactions. He acts for leading financial sponsors on cross-border acquisitions, disposals, equity investments, co-investments, and other financial sponsor related transactions, in particular in the infrastructure sector. Mr. Freeman was named a Private Equity Rising Star by Law.com in 2022.

"I am delighted to welcome James and Ed to Sidley as their focus on infrastructure private equity transactions will deepen the synergies of our global Private Equity and Energy, Transportation, and Infrastructure practices. With these two new partners, Sidley's expanding London office has added six new partners in the first three months of 2023," said Tom Thesing, a member of Sidley's Management and Executive Committees and managing partner of Sidley's office in London. "Fund managers focused on infrastructure assets have raised ever-increasing amounts of capital in recent years, and with the arrival of both James and Ed, we will be in an even better position to serve our global clients' needs."

"James and Ed will enhance our ability to serve our fund clients in particular and develop stronger global relationships in the wider infrastructure sector," said Cliff Vrielink, global leader of Sidley's Energy, Transportation, and Infrastructure practice and member of the firm's Executive Committee. "I have known James for many years, and the combined experience of James and Ed will help bolster our global team and expand our work for strategic clients and private equity and infrastructure funds."
