By Benedicte Gravrand, Opalesque London: A roundup of last week’s hedge fund launches, closures, index performance, trends, regulatory, legal and financial events pertaining to the alternative investments world.

Last week, we heard of fund launches from Atwater; Beacon Light Capital (global equities); Aros (onshore long-biased macro); Isometric (Asian securities); Gulfmena (Arab opportunities); Lucidus (high-yield debt); Legg Mason/Permal (global onshore); FS Capital (L/S equity); HSBC (UCITS FoHFs); Fabien Pictet and Partners (Ucits, emerging markets); and PSigma (US L/S Equity).

Ervin Shindell and other Citadel veterans launched a hedge fund firm called RoundKeep Capital in Chicago; a former Goldman Sachs Group star hedge fund manager, Mark Carhart, said he would launch a new firm in 2010.

Greenwich Global Hedge Fund Index up 2.9% in September, +16.8% YTD; Lyxor Hedge Fund Index was up + 1.14%, +5.40% YTD; AlternativeEdge Short-Term Traders Index up 0.045%, -1.064% YTD; RBC Hedge 250 Index returned +2.20% (est.), +17.44% YTD; Hedge Fund Replication Index up 0.99%, 7.7% YTD; Credit Suisse/Tremont Hedge Fund Index confirmed a performance of 3.04%, 14.97% YTD; Barclay Hedge Fund Index gained 3.25%, 20.05% YTD; Scotia Capital Canadian Hedge Fund Index was up 4.84%, YTD 20.97%; HFN Hedge Fund Aggregate Index retuned +2.74%, +16.76% YTD; HFN said that assets rose +2.98% to $1.948tln; Eurekahedge Hedge Fund Index up 2.45% (est.), 16.10% YTD; Eurekahedge also said assets could soon break through the $1.5tln barrier.

Bill Browder, the founder of hedge fund Hermitage Capital Management, launched an attack against alleged state corruption in Russia on YouTube, a video that gripped the nation; BCM Partners announced the addition of the Zenith High Yield Bond fund to its platform; ......................
