Opalesque Roundup: Many mega hedge funds post strong gains this year: hedge fund news, week 49

In the week ending December 4th 2020, Philippe Laffont's Coatue Management reported that it has notched up a 52% gain this year thanks to bets on electric carmaker Tesla and against Wirecard, the fraudulent German payments group, making it one of the best-performing big hedge funds in the world in 2020.

Other hedge funds like Pershing Square Holdings, Third Point and Lone Pine Capital also posted strong gains. Billionaire hedge fund manager William Ackman, who cautiously hedged his portfolio before the historic market sell-off in March, has extended his gains to 62.8% for the year so far; Daniel Loeb's Third Point LLC funds also posted strong gains in November to extend year-to-date returns into the double digits after the billionaire investor overhauled his portfolio and the firm a few months ago; Lone Pine Capital, the Tiger Cub founded by Stephen Mandel Jr., is up more than 23% in its flagship long-short fund through November - the firm's long-only fund is up even more - over 38% - thanks to November when it gained nearly 11%.
