Opalesque Roundup: Hope for hedge funds as mutual fund study finds that size will not always impact returns: hedge fund news, week 01

In the week ending 06 January 2017, a study a study of mutual fund performance in 2016 by research firm Birinyi Associates runs against the conventional wisdom that size would "kill" (or negatively impact) performance, at least in part.

In 2017, the same old hands are expected to impress within the hedge fund industry. Equity and macro hedge funds are expected to bounce back after a tough year; more fund exposures are seen leaning towards energy investments this year. Blackstone's Byron Wien released his list of Ten Surprises for 2017, including a mellowed down Donald Trump, real growth and other surprises; and Agecroft Partners released its annual prediction of top 10 hedge fund industry trends for 2017.

Lee Bressler and Brandon Bradford launched Carbon Investment Partners, an industrial-focused hedge fund; Bell Rock Group is launching the Evolution Offshore Emerging Manager Platform in the first quarter of 2017; Vivaris Capital has launched the first private equity hedge fund; and Thornburg Investment Management has launched its first long/short equity liquid alternative fund.
