Investors stick with hedge funds as October redemption notices fall to 1.62%

Wednesday, October 21, 2026

Matthias Knab, Opalesque for New Managers:

SS&C GlobeOp's Forward Redemption Indicator for October 2026 came in at 1.62%, a clear drop from 2.02% in September and comfortably below its five-year average of 2.06%. The reading is the lowest since April 2026, when the indicator touched an all-time low of 1.26%, and well below the 12-month high of 2.43% recorded in November 2025.

SS&C Chairman and CEO Bill Stone pointed to the macro backdrop as a reason investors are holding on to their hedge fund allocations. With the U.S. midterm elections, rising inflation and the financing of the AI buildout all creating uncertainty, he said, "allocators continue to favor hedge funds" as a tool to manage drawdowns and improve risk-adjusted returns.

Performance and capital flows

The SS&C GlobeOp Hedge Fund Performance Index shows a flash estimate of -0.31% for the latest month. Year-to-date the index is up 8.27%, over the last 12 months 12.99%, and since inception 378.86% (all figures gross; base of 100 points on 31 December 2005).

The SS&C GlobeOp Capital Movement Index reached a 12-month high of 133.10 in September 2026, up from a 12-month low of 127.76 in January 2026. Its all-time high remains 150.77, set in September 2013.

How the indicator works

The Forward Redemption Indicator measures forward redemption notices received from investors in hedge funds administered on the SS&C GlobeOp platform, divided by the platform's assets under administration at the start of the month. Because redemption notices are typically submitted 30 to 90 days before the redemption date, the indicator gives an early view of the redemption pipeline. Notices can be cancelled, and notice terms differ from fund to fund.

The figure has trended sharply lower since its peak of 19.27% in November 2008, which also saw the largest monthly change on record (9.60%). SS&C GlobeOp's assets under administration on the platform represent roughly 10% of estimated global hedge fund assets. The indicator is published on the 15th business day of each month; the next release is due on November 20, 2026.
