Syz Group restructures alternatives arm - hedge funds move to Bank Syz, legal assets spun out

Geneva-based Syz Group has overhauled its alternative investments business. Syz Capital will now focus exclusively on private equity, under a new chief executive, David Weintraub. His appointment is still subject to approval by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA).

As part of the reorganization, Syz Capital's broader multi-strategy set-up is being dismantled. Its hedge fund business will be integrated into Bank Syz, and its legal assets unit will be spun out through a management buyout.

"The clear focus on private equity allows us to build specifically on our existing strengths," said Eric Syz, CEO of Syz Group.

Two private equity strategies

Syz Capital will pursue two complementary strategies. The first is direct investment in small and mid-sized European B2B companies. The second is a primary private equity program that will give investors access to diversified portfolios.

From LEGO's family holding to Geneva

Weintraub joins from KIRKBI, the private investment holding company behind the LEGO Group, where he was an Investment Director. There he was responsible for numerous investments, with a focus on technology-enabled sectors in Europe. Before KIRKBI, he worked in investment banking at Alantra, advising companies and financial sponsors on M&A transactions.
