Allocators double their pace into hedge funds as equity long/short carries the first half

Hedge fund allocators have sharply accelerated their deployment this year, and equity long/short rather than macro has been the strategy that delivered. These are the headline findings of "The Halfway Mark", BNP Paribas' mid-year 2026 Hedge Fund Allocation Survey, which polled 175 allocators in 18 countries managing a combined USD 1.2 trillion in hedge fund assets.

Responding allocators added a net USD 26.8 billion to hedge funds in the first half of 2026, more than twice the USD 10.8 billion they reported for the first half of 2025. They plan to deploy a further USD 24.9 billion in net new capital before year-end.

Marlin Naidoo, Global Head of Capital Introduction at BNP Paribas, described the faster pace of deployment as "a direct response to the industry's ability to deliver robust returns," and said he expects the trend to continue through the second half as allocators look for both growth and diversification. The numbers look even stronger against the bank's January outlook. In that survey, conducted over the turn of the year among 246 allocators advising on USD 1.1 trillion, 64% of respondents said they planned to increase hedge fund exposure on a net basis, which BNP Paribas estimated would add around USD 24 billion over the whole of 2026.
