Capula Investment Management launches new CTA

London-based $35 billion hedge fund Capula Investment Management has launched a new CTA, which will be led by Yao Hua Ooi, who has recently joined the firm from AQR.

The Capula Alternative Markets Alpha Fund has capacity of $2-3 billion and is in its fundraising stage, according to a report from Bloomberg. Capula is primarily a relative value fund, but has made a series of new hires in recent weeks with the goal of diversifying its capabilities.

In early August, Wouter Verdam was hired as a portfolio manager from Freepoint Commodities, and Jakob Stawiarz joined from Element Alpha. In June, Tom Bowles joined the firm from Man AHL, where he was previously in the partnership. Man AHL is the quantitative trading arm of Man Group. Robert Burleigh also recently joined from Jain Global. Last year, John Anderson, the former global co-head of fixed income and commodities at Millennium Management joined the firm to set up a multi-strategy team.

CTA strategies are typically rules-based trading programs that rely on sophisticated algorithms and use high performance computing to identify potential trading signals and take positions. CTAs have come into focus for investors recently on the back of volatility across commodity asset classes.
