Matthias Knab, Opalesque: Fasanara Capital, the technology-driven global asset manager with $6 billion in assets under management, has appointed Dr Darran Specter, CFA, as Head of Quant Equity - a hire that says as much about where the firm is placing its bets as it does about the individual filling the seat.
Based in London, Specter will work alongside Vinicius Karam, Managing Director and Head of Fasanara Quant, on the continued build-out of Open Quant, the firm's multi-manager quantitative investment platform. His mandate has a specific center of gravity that will interest anyone tracking emerging talent: identifying and evaluating emerging external equity quantitative managers globally, alongside overall portfolio construction and investment process.
That focus is the story. Open Quant is a multi-manager, multi-strategy hedge fund designed to deliver returns through a diversified portfolio of uncorrelated strategies across asset classes and liquid markets. Its engine is discovery - sourcing, onboarding and managing innovative trading models through an integrated technology platform, and allocating institutional capital to niche strategies run by independent emerging portfolio managers worldwide. In an industry where capital continues to concentrate in a handful of large multi-strategy platforms, Fasanara is doing the opposite at the manager-selection layer: building infrastructure specifically to find and back the next generation of quant talent before it is obvious.
Specter arrives with the kind of allocator pedigree that lends credibility to that search. He brings more than 20 years across quantitative investing, portfolio construction, risk management and hedge fund manager selection. He joins from Brevan Howard, where he spent two years as Senior Portfolio Strategist and developed frameworks supporting portfolio manager evaluation and capital allocation.
Before Brevan Howard, he spent more than 11 years at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) as a Portfolio Manager, where he was responsible for managing multi-billion-dollar allocations to systematic hedge fund strategies. Earlier, he was Investment Manager and Head of Quantitative Investment Research at Cardano, and a Senior Quantitative and Risk Analyst at NewFinance, acquired by Schroders in 2006. He holds a PhD and a First Class MEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Imperial College London, and is a CFA Charterholder.
The through-line in that resume is worth noting: much of Specter's career has been spent on the buy side of the manager-selection equation - deciding which systematic managers deserve capital, and how much. That is precisely the skill Open Quant monetizes.
"I am delighted to be joining Fasanara at an exciting stage in the development of its multi-manager platform," Specter said. "I look forward to working closely with the Quant team as we continue to develop the platform, deepen our manager network and identify emerging quantitative talent globally."
Karam framed the hire in terms of institutional depth. "Darran brings an exceptional combination of quantitative expertise and institutional experience across manager evaluation, portfolio construction and capital allocation," he said. "Having spent much of his career assessing quantitative investment talent and managing significant allocations on behalf of sophisticated institutions, his experience will add further depth to our investment process."
For Fasanara, the appointment forms part of a broader push to expand its quantitative capabilities as it scales its technology, research and investment infrastructure and grows its global network of quant managers. Founded in 2011, the firm offers tech-enabled asset-based credit and digital assets solutions, and manages capital on behalf of pension funds, insurance companies and other institutional investors using a technology-driven, systematic approach.
The wider signal for emerging managers is the one worth holding onto. Allocators are increasingly institutionalizing the discovery of small and mid-sized systematic managers - turning what was once relationship-driven and ad hoc into a repeatable, technology-supported process. A platform that hires a former ADIA and Brevan Howard allocator specifically to hunt for emerging equity quant talent is telling that talent something useful: the door is open, and someone whose full-time job is to find you is now walking through it.
