SEC's new unit shows that accounting integrity is central to enforcement agenda

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is launching a Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit within its Division of Enforcement, dedicated to pursuing accounting and financial reporting fraud and broader misconduct in accounting and auditing. It will collaborate closely with other SEC divisions to align enforcement with agency policy goals.

Director David Woodcock said the unit builds on existing efforts to hold bad actors accountable in the profession. It will be led by Timothy Zimmerman, a senior advisor who joined the SEC in May 2026 after 12 years at an international law firm and a role as Deputy General Counsel at an accounting firm. The unit will combine attorneys and accountants with specialized financial reporting expertise.

Accounting integrity is essential
