Gotbit's Fraud Unraveled: How fake trading volume became Federal crime

On August 3, 2026, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced the proposed final judgment settling its fraud and market manipulation claims against Gotbit Consulting LLC (also known as Gotbit Hedge Fund), a cryptocurrency "market maker" firm that operated from 2018 to 2024. The settlement, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, marks the civil conclusion to one of the most consequential enforcement actions targeting crypto wash trading in the alternatives industry.

The SEC's October 2024 complaint alleged that Gotbit orchestrated a systematic scheme to manipulate markets for cryptocurrency assets offered as securities, particularly through self-trading - commonly known as "wash trading" - that generated artificial trading volume with no legitimate economic purpose. The scheme targeted retail investors, creating the false impression of market interest to induce purchases at artificially inflated prices.

Wash trading occurs when a trader simultaneously acts as both buyer and seller, creating a false appearance of market activity and liquidity.
