Opalesque is a Media Partner of SuperReturn International 2026 in Berlin, with Opalesque founder Matthias Knab participating. As the world's largest and most influential conference for private equity and venture capital, more than 2,000 LPs (Limited Partners) managing over $50 trillion in assets and over 3,000 GPs (General Partners) are represented.

On the first day of the conference I had the opportunity to sit down with Sagard CEO Paul Desmarais III and talk about building a $46 billion "multi-specialist" firm, why the industry is consolidating around scale, and the craft-shop philosophy he is betting will outlast the "factories".

Paul Desmarais III occupies an unusual seat. He is, in his own description, two people at once - "a third-generation family business person" whose family built one of the largest life insurers and the largest independent wealth business in Canada, and "a first-generation entrepreneur" who co-founded Sagard in 2016 with $400 million seeded by that family and has since grown it to $46 billion. The goal is to double again, to $100 billion, within four years.
