Average loss per crypto crime surges 170% year-over-year to $25.6m

A month and a half before the year's end, and it's clear that 2025 has been one of the worst years for crypto crime. Since January, hackers and criminals have stolen a mind-blowing $2.5 billion, $800 million more than last year and the third-highest figure on record. But what's even more worrying is that the losses are rising while the number of scams is falling, causing a massive spike in the average loss per crypto crime.

According to data presented by BestWallet.com, the average loss per crypto crime has surged by 170% year-over-year, reaching $25.6 million in 2025.

The Second-Highest Average Crypto Crime Loss in a Decade

Although tightened rules and improved blockchain tracking tools have cut the number of crypto scams, they have become bigger and more sophisticated. Since the beginning of the year, crypto criminals have stolen $2.54 billion, nearly 50% more than in 2024 or 2023, making 2025 the third-worst year for this type of crime. But what's even more worrying is that they managed to steal roughly $800 million more in half the number of scams compared to last year. This shows a clear shift in how crypto crime works, with hackers causing more damage in fewer but bigger, more professional attacks, often targeting DeFi protocols, centralized platforms, or big investor pools.
