European private market fund managers control $2.73 trillion, 40% of infrastructure assets globally

Matthias Knab, Opalesque: European private market funds have quietly become a global powerhouse. According to Ocorian's new Global Asset Monitor, managers running European-domiciled private market funds now oversee around USD 2.73 trillion in assets - roughly one fifth of global private market AUM.

For hedge funds and alternative managers, this isn't just a big number - it is a structural shift in where long-duration capital is being deployed, and in which asset classes Europe is starting to dominate.

Where the Money Is: A Breakdown by Asset Class

Within the USD 2.73 trillion in European private markets, private equity is still the main growth engine, but it is far from the whole story. Ocorian's analysis shows:

  • Private equity: USD 1.48 trillion (54% of European private markets)
  • Infrastructure: USD 518 billion (19%)
  • Private credit: USD 403 billion (15%)
  • Real estate: USD 329 billion (12%)

The headline: Europe has become a core hub for infrastructure capital. Nearly 40% of global private market infrastructure assets are in Europe, and European investors account for a similar share of infrastructure funds under management - almost on par with North America.
