Emerging markets infrastructure debt gains traction with investors

Bailey McCann, Opalesque New York for New Managers: Investors are taking a closer look at emerging markets as investing in the west looks increasingly expensive and risky. One area where capital is flowing is emerging markets infrastructure debt.

After four years of outflows, emerging markets corporate debt is seeing new inflows - $13 billion year to date, according to data from JP Morgan. This includes hard currency debt which saw $4 billion and local currency issues which saw $8.9 billion. A weaker dollar, record issuance and growing concerns over the economic stability of the west are all factors giving this part of the credit market a boost.

Those factors are also driving capital into Global Infrastructure Finance's flagship emerging markets infrastructure debt strategy. The strategy is designed to find opportunities in the financing of infrastructure in emerging markets that have a growing middle class and rapidly expanding urban areas with high infrastructure needs.

The strategy is managed by Susan Wisialko. Wisialko was previously the sole emerging market corporate and structured credit analyst at GMO. She was also a partner at CrossRegional Management, a hedge fund focused on global emerging markets infrastructure debt.
