Family offices focus on private equity

Family offices, like all investors, are doing their best to understand the current market environment. Those efforts are resulting in a shift toward private equity - a notable move as private equity is in the midst of a multi-year slowdown in activity. However, the latest survey of family offices from Citi Wealth suggests that family offices are still finding pockets of opportunity within private equity and hope to expand their allocations significantly over the next year.

The survey includes responses from 346 family offices worldwide and was conducted in June and July 2025.

36% of family offices that plan to change their allocations over the next year said that they would be increasing investments in private equity. More specifically, family offices with AUM above $500 million were likelier to increase their allocations to the asset class than their smaller counterparts.

Family offices prefer growth equity and buyout strategies if they are investing in private equity funds. Smaller family offices typically favor growth equity whereas larger family offices tend to invest in buyout funds. Both cohorts also make investments in venture capital funds. 70% of family offices make direct investments and plan to continue actively pursuing that strategy alongside allocations to traditional funds.
