Singapore and Hong Kong asset management industries are stable but diverging in focus

According to an analysis by global law firm Reed Smith LLP of the 2024 MAS and SFC asset management surveys, the asset management industry in both Singapore and Hong Kong is stable, and cross-border capital flows are core components for both markets. Furthermore, Singapore is positioning itself as pan-Asian hub, particularly in alternative investments and ESG strategies, while Hong Kong is focusing on strengthening its connectivity to Mainland China.

Overall industry performance

Both Singapore and Hong Kong demonstrated remarkable resilience in their asset management sectors during 2024, achieving double-digit growth in assets under management (AuM) despite challenging global economic conditions and market volatility. This growth was accompanied by increased adoption of local fund structures, with Singapore's variable capital companies (VCCs) and Hong Kong's open-ended fund companies (OFCs) gaining traction as managers increasingly chose onshore domiciliation.

Shared characteristics

The two financial centres share several key similarities that underscore their roles as international asset management hubs. Cross-border capital flows remain fundamental to both markets, with offshore investors contributing 77% of Singapore's AuM and 63% of Hong Kong's AuM (54% excluding Mainland China). Both centres also demonstrate strong global allocation capabilities, deploying 88% of Singapore-managed assets and 59% of Hong Kong-ma......................
