Established manager hedge fund study shows shift towards bespoke strategies

The 2025 Edition of law firm Seward & Kissel's Established Manager Hedge Fund Study analyses investment managers with at least five years of experience and $1bn in regulatory AuM. The study specifically examines managers who created new fund classes or launched new hedge funds in 2024, providing insights into current market trends and comparing findings to previous studies.

The most notable trend is the dramatic shift toward bespoke investment strategies (from 10% to 38%), particularly long-only funds designed to capitalize on current economic conditions. The study also reveals how established managers maintain premium fee structures compared to newer funds, reflecting their greater market power and operational complexity. Here are the key findings:

Investment strategies: shift toward bespoke approaches

The most significant trend identified was a dramatic increase in bespoke investment strategies, which jumped from just 10% in the 2024 study to 38% in 2025. These bespoke strategies are more directional in nature, designed to capitalize on current economic trends such as interest rates, inflation, and market cycles, with long-only strategies being particularly popular.
