Laxman Pai, Opalesque Asia: Total assets under management of the 500 largest asset managers in the world hit $128trn at the end of 2023, representing a 12.5% uptick from the previous year, after AUM fell 13.7%, or $18trn, during 2022, revealed a study.
According to new research from WTW's Thinking Ahead Institute in conjunction with Pensions & Investments, 60.8% of that total AUM ($77.8 trillion) was in North America-an uptick of 15% from the year before.
"North America experienced the largest growth in AUM with a 15.0% increase, followed closely by Europe (incl the U.K.) with a 12.4% rise. Japan saw a slight decline, with AUM decreasing by 0.7%. Managers from the Rest of the World category saw a moderate increase in AUM of 3.2%," said the study.
Research from WTW also showed that most assets remain in stocks and bonds, and interest in passive strategies is growing. Global investors continue to pour the majority of their capital into North American assets.
BlackRock, Vanguard, Fidelity, State Street, and JP Morgan made up the top five largest money managers in the world, managing more than $30trn between them. For the first time ever, passive investment strategies accounted for more than one-third of AUM among the 500 largest.
The Top 20 managers' share of total AUM grew from 44.2% in 2022 to 45.5% in 2023, with their total AUM rising 15.9% to USD 58.2 trillion.
