The total value of global M&A deals increased 29.1% year over year to $708.74bn in 3Q 2024

The number of global M&A announcements increased quarter over quarter for the second straight period, the first time that has happened since the third and fourth quarters of 2020, according to a study.

The total value of global M&A deals increased 29.1% year over year to $708.74 billion in the third quarter, said a report by S&P Global.

The third quarter marked the second straight period in which global M&A announcements increased quarter over quarter. The quarter-over-quarter pickup was slight, growing just 0.36%, but it was the first time the number of deals picked up in back-to-back quarters since the third and fourth quarters of 2020.

On a year-over-year basis, global M&A announcements increased by 7.3%, and this ended a streak of 10 straight quarters of global announcements decreasing.

"Thanks to the dealmaking from the Asia-Pacific region, global M&A announcements increased from the previous quarter and year-ago period. While the increase was modest, the positive turn is noteworthy because the number of transactions has been trending down since 2022 when the Federal Reserve began its aggressive interest rate hiking schedule to combat inflation," the report said.

Some of the largest Asia-Pacific transactions announced in the third quarter involved private equity buyers. Blackstone Inc. agreed to buy data center operator AirTrunk Operating Pty Ltd. for $16.13 billion. Bain Capital LP and KKR & Co. Inc. are bidding on Japan-bas......................
