Family offices, ultra high net worth investors eye private equity

A new report from Barclays Private Bank says that family offices and ultra high net worth investors are increasingly looking for ways to invest in private markets - specifically private equity. The report says that both groups are willing to make private equity investments directly and through fund-managed channels.

The interest from these two investor groups could bolster fundraising over the next few years. According to the report, 67% of ultra high net worth investors see the value of private equity for enhancing long-term portfolio returns.

The report notes that when these investor groups look for fund managers they are primarily interested in finding managers who are established and have a positive long-term track record. However, the competition for top quartile funds is steep, even among institutional investors and that could limit the opportunities that family offices or ultra high net worth investors have without an intermediary like a financial advisor that can provide access to those managers. The report notes that these investor groups might consider emerging managers who are typically willing to take on smaller ticket sizes and want to start building relationships with their LPs.

Performance data shows that emerging managers typically outperform larger funds especially during their early years when they can be more opportunistic in how they choose investments.
