Chris Ford, manager of the Sanlam Global Artificial Intelligence Fund, explains why AI is set to transform the world and why he only invests in companies that are committed to the technology. In Part 1, he describes the nature of AI and its potential. Here, he talks about the disruptions caused by AI and the edge that companies that are fully engaged have.

Disruptions and the value of data

When asked to list the potential disruptions caused by AI in the business environment, ChatGPT says: automation of routine tasks, improved decision-making, personalised customer experiences, disruption of traditional business models, workforce transformation, and ethical considerations.

All the disruptions created by AI in the business world are only the tip of the iceberg and are indecipherable for many. "Financial analysts don't understand the direction of the P&L of the companies that use AI," Ford notes.

Data is in itself a resource that is not accounted for; many companies are unaware of the data they have and how to use it.
