AI is as big as electricity (Part 1)

Chris Ford, UK-based manager of the Sanlam Global Artificial Intelligence Fund, explains why AI is set to transform the world and why he only invests in companies that are committed to the technology. Here, he describes the nature of AI and its potential.

What is AI?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is nebulous, it is difficult to define, says Chris Ford during a presentation in Geneva. But he ventures this: "AI looks to synthesise, automate, and optimise the process of converting information into useful and actionable knowledge."

AI came to the limelight with Go. The computer program that plays the board game Go, AlphaGo, was developed by London-based DeepMind Technologies, an acquired subsidiary of Google (now Alphabet Inc.), almost two decades after IBM's computer Deep Blue beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov in the 1997 match. But the first video game using rudimentary AI, Checkers, was launched in the 1950s. It had clearly defined rules then. After that came games with no clearly defined rules, such as interactive video games.
