Gensler says he wants more focus on hedge funds oversight

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler said in a congressional hearing at the end of March that the SEC "requires new tools, expertise, and resources" to combat misconduct in the crypto space, reported Bitcoin.com. Two weeks later, he reiterated his position in a statement. Crypto platforms and DeFi platforms must obey the securities laws, he said. The SEC today reopened the comment period on proposed amendments to the definition of "exchange".

But he is not only aiming for the crypto side of the market. In an interview with the Financial Times, he said that hedge funds, a $4.8tln industry, and other parts of the shadow banking system should face greater scrutiny after last month's upheaval in US government bonds. It is now more important than ever, he said.
