Kudu invests in alternative credit manager Variant

Kudu Investment Management, LLC has made a minority investment in Variant Investments, LLC. Kudu is a provider of permanent capital solutions to independent asset and wealth managers worldwide, and Variant is an SEC-registered alternative credit specialist and interval fund manager that manages more than $2.3bn for RIA clients. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Variant, headquartered in Portland and established in 2017, remains employee-controlled and is led by co-founders Bob Elsasser, Curt Fintel, and J.B. Hayes. The firm invests in uncorrelated income-generating assets in niche private markets and offers its strategies to investors through institutional closed-end interval funds.

The $2.3bn Variant Alternative Income Fund (NICHX) was launched in October 2017 and invests in specialty finance, litigation finance, royalties, and other income-generating opportunities outside the investment mainstream. The $23m Variant Impact Fund (IMPCX) was introduced in November 2021 and seeks to provide a high level of current income. It works in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
