All but one of the top 100 ESG funds posted negative returns

The world's largest 100 environmental, social, and governance (ESG)-themed funds by asset size - comprising equity and fixed-income mutual funds and exchange-traded funds - collectively have assets under management (AuM) of US$440 billion, said a study.

According to the study by Opimas, a research and consulting firm focused on capital markets, all but one of the 100 largest ESG funds by asset size - comprising equity and fixed-income mutual funds and exchange-traded funds - posted negative returns for the year ended Oct. 31; however, on average, these funds still outperformed their benchmarks by 1.1 percentage points.

The best performer among the top 100 ESG funds is the money market fund Morgan Stanley Institutional Liquidity Funds ESG Money Market Portfolio, which returned 1.2% for the year ending October 31. All 99 of his other ESG funds posted losses during this period.

Sixty of the top 100 ESG funds are domiciled in the European Union, followed by the United States, with 32. Japan and China have only two and one funds in the top 100, respectively.

Geographically, 60 of the top 100 funds are located in the European Union and 32 are based in the United States. In non-EU countries in Europe, he has three funds in the UK, one each in Norway and Switzerland. The list of funds is rounded out by Japan with his two ESG funds and her one in China.
