Ex-Northern Trust CEO Shundrawn Thomas launches investment firm Copia Group

Former President and CEO of Northern Trust Asset Management Shundrawn Thomas is launching his own private investment firm alongside Anthony Hoye who was previously Director, Senior Credit Officer in the Global Corporate & Investment Banking group at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Thomas left his role at Northern Trust on June 1 of this year to launch the new firm.

The Copia Group will invest in lower middle market companies with diverse owners. These companies will typically have $10-100 million in revenue with a strong runway for growth.

Copia Group has also partnered with Morningstar Sustainalytics to develop a proprietary social-impact framework that will help identify and assess companies to ensure they are meeting the firm's social impact goals.

"We believe that scalable businesses, managed in a socially responsible way, have the potential to deliver superior results," Thomas said in an interview with Opalesque. Thomas adds that companies owned by women or ethnically diverse people have some unique competitive advantages that can make them good candidates for investment. Companies that have inclusive cultures tend to perform well financially over the long term and are often more resilient during times of uncertainty.
