Just 15 infrastructure funds raise $50bn aggregate capital in Q2 2022

The infrastructure asset class' fundraising furor continues into Q2 2022 - $50bn aggregate capital was raised by just 15 funds in the quarter, said a study.

According to Q2 2022 Infrastructure Report by Preqin, there have been seven funds closing with more than $5bn of capital secured by each in 2022 so far - two more than the whole of 2019.

The frantic fundraising has seen the infrastructure asset class secure a year's worth of capital in just six months, as investors flock to the asset class, the report said.

"This flood of very large fund closings is driving average fund sizes for the year to over $3bn, at odds with a long-term average of closer to $1bn," Preqin said.

As global energy markets continue to grapple with high oil prices, and Europe tries to break its reliance on Russian hydrocarbons, the private infrastructure asset class is experiencing an ongoing fundraising furor, the report said. Aggregate capital raised over Q2 2022 reveals another stellar quarter of fundraising.

Meanwhile, the report pointed out that with dry powder at $319bn, its lowest share of AUM on record at just below 30% at the end of 2021, the potential for an uptick in capital calls could see net cash flow return to trend.
