The SPAC bubble is bursting

The SPAC bubble is bursting, according to Charles-Henry Monchau, CIO at Zyz, a banking and asset management group in Switzerland. "With monetary policies tightening, speculative bubbles are bursting one after the other," he says. "SPACs are no exception."

The SPAC bubble burst was predicted by Ivana Naumovska, professor at INSEAD, last year. She said the most obvious sign could be found in the frenzied growth of the practice, in testimonials that the boom was not sustainable in the long term, and in that many firms taken public by SPACS had little to show in terms of business plan or revenue. The most infamous example was Nikola Motor Company, which was accused of fraud by short-sellers three months after going public. Another red flag came in the form of negative media sentiment and regulatory concern.

A special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) is a company that has no commercial operations and is formed strictly to raise capital through an initial public offering (IPO) or the purpose of acquiring or merging with an existing company.
