Laxman Pai, Opalesque Asia: Venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has launched its inaugural gaming fund with plans to invest $600 million across game studios, gaming-related consumer apps, and infrastructure.
A16z investors Andrew Chen, Jonathan Lai, and James Gwertzman said in a blog post that the fund is dedicated to building the future of the games industry.
Among notable gaming industry investors in the fund are David Baszucki, founder of Roblox; Jason Citron, founder of Discord; Marc Merrill, co-founder of Riot Games; Mike Morhaime, co-founder of Blizzard; Aleks Larsen and Jeffrey Zirlin, co-founders of Sky Mavis; Kevin Lin, co-founder of Twitch; Mark Pincus, founder of Zynga; and Riccardo Zacconi, founder of King.
Games will continue to play a pivotal role in how people socialize, play, and work in the future, and the fund will invest in game studios, game and customer experiences, and infrastructure, the Silicon Valley venture capital firm said.
"The most successful games today, such as Fortnite, League of Legends, and Minecraft, are communities that retain loyal, long-term users and generate billions of dollars in annual revenue. Furthermore, games are also driving innovation across the entire consumer ecosystem, pioneering best-in-class mechanisms for user engagement, retention, and monetization, such as microtransactions, battle passes, and web3 tokens," the blog said.
