Private markets AUM hits nearly $10tn in 2021

Total assets under management across private markets reached $9.8 trillion as of June 30, 2021, up from $7.4 trillion a year earlier, said a study.

According to a report by McKinsey & Company, after a year of pandemic-driven turbulence that suppressed fundraising and deal activity, private markets rebounded across the board.

Fundraising was up by nearly 20 percent year over year to reach a record of $1.184 trillion in 2021, up by nearly 20% from $990 billion in 2020 and 1.6% from $1.166 trillion in 2019. The dealmakers were busier than ever, deploying $3.5 trillion across asset classes, the report said.

Private equity continued to drive global growth in private markets, the report noted. Fundraising rebounded across regions, and global totals fell just short of the pre-pandemic peak established in 2019. AUM reached an all-time high of $6.3 trillion, driven primarily by asset appreciation within portfolios.

Global buyout and growth equity deal volume grew nearly 50 percent year on year to over $2 trillion in more than 14,000 transactions.

Within real estate, investors rotated to higher risk-return strategies relative to their pre-pandemic preferences, which perhaps reflects investors anticipating buying opportunities in a stressed or distressed environment.
