Agera Capital looks for megatrend opportunities in emerging markets

Opalesque New York for New Managers:

A new hedge fund has launched with the aim of providing better terms for investors. London-based Agera Capital is a fundamental equity strategy that provides real-time portfolio information and no lockup.

The strategy is the work of Mathias Wikberg, who was previously Senior Portfolio Manager at Cambridge Strategy, a $3bn systematic hedge fund in London. Wikberg has invested a significant portion of his liquid net worth alongside early investors in the strategy. Wikberg tells Opalesque New Managers that his goal is to provide a strategy that is investor friendly and doesn't act like a high-priced mutual fund.

The fund uses fundamental stock picking with a thematic overlay to build positions in approximately 30-40 global stocks. The strategy has an unconstrained mandate, which gives Wikberg the ability to pursue opportunities regardless of sector or geography. Wikberg is looking for unique themes that have the potential to be medium to long-term compounders.

"A big theme for us right now is emerging markets fintech," he says. "It's very early days for this segment and many of the first movers are able to come in and take all the market share. So it's really winner take all, with those names then becoming extreme compounders in a way."
