Opalesque Roundup: Hedge funds post annual return of +16.63% in 2020, the highest since 2009: hedge fund news, week 06

In the week ending February 5th 2020, Preqin said that returns across hedge fund asset class were +16.63%, ahead of the S&P 500 PR Index (16.26%), resulting in the asset class' highest annual return since 2009. Hedge funds also offered downside protection through lower levels of volatility over 2020 compared with the public markets. Equity was the best performing hedge fund strategy with a +19.64% return.

In performance news, Hedge fund Sender Company & Partners ended January on a high note - the fund is up 16.63% net for the month. January's performance builds on a strong 2020 - Sender ended the year up 69.38% net; A $3 billion credit fund Centerbridge Partners began investing in March returned an annualized 90% in 2020, making it a top performer among vehicles designed to take advantage of pandemic-related price dislocations, and Robert Citrone's Discovery Global Opportunity fund picked up in January where it left off last year - the macro fund, which surged in 2020 after several years of disappointing returns, kept it up last month, shrugging off last month's volatility to gain 6.45 percent.
