Former hedge fund professionals launch US Vegan Climate ETF today

Beyond Investing, a vegan and cruelty-free investment platform, is launching the NYSE-listed US Vegan Climate ETF (ticker VEGN) on 10th September.

The ETF is the first of its kind. It will track the performance of the US Vegan Climate Index, also created by Beyond Investing in June 2018. The 300 or so large-cap holdings of the index are found among constituents of the Solactive US Large Cap Index (an alternative to the S&P 500).

Companies engaged in animal exploitation, defence, human rights abuses, fossil fuels extraction, and energy production and other environmentally damaging activities are excluded from the VEGAN index. Some mid-caps that pass that screening test are added to the index. An indicative list of top-ten holdings shows a strong focus on technology and financial stocks.

The team applies market cap weighting with risk spreading across the largest stocks, and conducts bi-annual rebalances and reviews of inclusions and exclusions.

A back-test of the index' performance shows a total return of almost 104% over five years - from June 2013 to June 2018 - compared to 75% for the Solactive US Large Cap index. Solactive is a German firm that produces and manages indices.
