Cryptojacking campaigns up by 29% in Q1 2019: McAfee Labs

There have been new cryptojacking families and campaigns detected, According to the McAfee Labs Threats Report in August 2019. The report informs that cryptojacking campaigns that targetted victims' computers to mine digital assets increased by 29%.

Not only Windows users were affected but also Apple users were targetted by these new campaigns. 

One of these malware campaigns detected was the PsMiner that was distributed through a Trojan that had also worm capabilities included. This Monero miner is dropped using a PowerShell command that installs the miner. 

Additionally, the firm discovered a malware family that targets Apple users called CookieMiner. This malware strain is reportedly designed to mine the cryptocurrency Koto, which appears to be zero-knowledge proof crypto from Japan.

Another new malware family, CookieMiner, was discovered targeting Apple users and sharing code with a past campaign with the end goal of stealing wallets and credentials.

CookieMiner used Empyre to automate the process of stealing data in the systems. The malware was observed stealing data from popular services such as Binance, Bitstamp, Bittrex, Coinbase, MyEtherWallet, and Poloniex.

While CookieMiner stole information such as passwords to browse and steal data in order to gain access to those cryptocurrency sites, the malware's unique objective was to infect the machines to mine coin Koto. CookieMiner was implanted as a library in ......................
