Wilshire Liquid Alternative Index gains 2.02% in January

The Wilshire Liquid Alternative Index returned 2.02% in January, slightly under performing the 2.13% monthly return of the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index.

"January observed a sharp reversal in sentiment as volatility declined and risk assets, such as equities and high yield credits, appreciated in light of a more accommodative monetary policy outlook," said Jason Schwarz, President of Wilshire Funds Management and Wilshire Analytics.

Meanwhile, the Wilshire Liquid Alternative Equity Hedge Index ended the month up 3.55%, underperforming the 3.92% return of the HFRX Equity Hedge Index.

"Long-biased managers added positively to performance, driven by gains in domestic equity positions. Domestic strategies outperformed global strategies as U.S. equities outperformed European equities. Additionally, growth-oriented strategies outperformed value strategies," a report from Wilshire said.

The Wilshire Liquid Alternative Multi-Strategy Index, which includes both single and multi-manager funds, returned 2.58% January.

Meanwhile the Wilshire Liquid Alternative Global Macro Index ended the month down -0.31%, outperforming the -1.91% return of the HFRX Macro/CTA Index.

"CTAs were short equities going into the month due to the fourth quarter's negative trend and were negatively impacted when markets quickly reversed to the upside," said a release from Wilshire.
