Liquid alternatives fell in June as volatility continues

The broad liquid alternative investment space was slightly down in June with the Wilshire Liquid Alternative Index declining -0.24% last month, bringing second quarter results to -0.56% as volatility continues to hound the market.

The returns underperformed the -0.19% monthly return and 0.16% quarterly return of the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index.

Highlights for June include:

  • The Wilshire Liquid Alternative Index SM returned -0.24%
  • The Wilshire Liquid Alternative Multi-Strategy Index SM returned -0.23%
  • The Wilshire Liquid Alternative Global Macro Index SM returned -0.09%
  • The Wilshire Liquid Alternative Relative Value Index SM returned -0.22%
  • The Wilshire Liquid Alternative Equity Hedge Index SM decreased -0.55%
  • The Wilshire Liquid Alternative Event Driven Index SM gained 0.50%

"Volatility continued in the second quarter, as investors assessed the impacts of rising geopolitical risks and the changing interest rate environment," said Jason Schwarz, president of Wilshire Funds Management and Wilshire Analytics. "Despite heightened tensions, fundamentals remained positive, which bolstered both equity and credit returns."
