Hedge funds rebound in mid-March with elevated volatility

Wednesday, March 21, 2018

Komfie Manalo, Opalesque Asia:

Hedge funds posted gains through mid-March even as the global financial markets were mixed during the period and the elevated volatility from the prior month continuing. The HFRX Market Directional Index and the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index gained 0.56% and 0.19%, respectively, Hedge Fund Research said.

It added that the HFRX Equity Hedge Index was up 0.56% with declines from fundamental and market neutral strategies. The HFRX Fundamental Growth Index gained 1.50% for the period from exposure to global healthcare equities and mixed performance from emerging markets strategies. The HFRX Market Neutral Index increased 0.25% from mixed performance in mean reverting, factor based strategies and fundamental managers. The HFRX Fundamental Value Index added 0.09% from exposure to U.S. large-cap technology and consumer equity.

HFR said in its latest report, "Global financial markets were mixed through mid-March, with elevated volatility from the prior month continuing. US equities and the technology sectors led equity performance through mid-month, though large cap US equities posted a modest decline; European & Asian equity market performance was also mixed, with narrow gains in Italy and China offset by declines in France, Germany, UK and Japan."
