Bailey McCann, Opalesque New York: Asian investors are looking for ways to protect recent gains and are starting to take a global view, according to delegates at the recent Opalesque Hong Kong Roundtable.
"When I meet investors, most of them are saying they had a great run and their biggest nightmare is to protect those gains," says Vishweshwar Anantharam, Founder and Partner at Vanhau Asset Management. Anantharam expects to see an increase in asset flows to Asian Macro funds in response. Emerging markets have the best shot for continued growth in an already extended cycle and unlike global macro funds, which have had a hard time with consistent performance, Asian Macro funds could be well positioned to pick up the emerging markets opportunity.
"Macro funds are not only betting on Armageddon events," Anantharam notes. "We
are also active in markets which are well insulated, well protected and likely to benefit from the reform
process. India and China certainly fall into that bracket."
Anantharam expects that China will continue to grow and adds that recent reforms will make the growth more stable and sustainable over the long-term.
His views were echoed by Thomas Hugger, CEO and founder of Asia Frontier Capital. "Even if there's a correction and the market is going maybe from growth into more moderate or
