Hedge funds gain in March as global markets post mixed returns

Hedge funds posted modest gains last month with the HFRX Absolute Return Index rising +0.25% (+0.65% YTD) and the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index gaining +0.03% for month (+1.66% YTD), Hedge Fund Research said in its monthly report.

"Global financial markets posted mixed performance in March, as the U.S. Federal Reserve increased U.S. interest rates," HFR said. It added, "Global equity markets were mixed, with Nasdaq and European gains offset by narrow declines in U.S. large cap and energy sector exposure. U.S. rates increased modestly for the month across most maturities, while European yields also rose following Brexit developments and Netherlands election."

During March, commodity declines were led by oil, copper and platinum, which were partially offset by increases in natural gas, aluminum and cocoa. The U.S. dollar declined against most currencies despite the Fed increase, falling modestly against the GBP, euro and Swiss franc.

Other hedge fund strategies gain

The HFRX Equity Hedge Index posted a gain of +0.66% as global equity markets were mixed during the period. The HFRX Fundamental Growth Index posted a gain of +1.23% from gains in emerging Asia, Europe and Latin America exposure.
