New York manager soft-launches equity hedge fund with focus on secular changes

Those looking to identify long-term growth investment strategies will most often look to secular trends. And with a little help from data science, which extracts knowledge and data in various forms, you have a well-informed strategy riding the waves of change.

The Somar Global Fund is such a fund. Run by Pedro Ramos, who founded Somar Capital Partners in New York last year after serving as as managing director of equity investment firm Tremblant Capital, the global long/short equity fund focuses on businesses that are impacted by secular change.

The fund was created last year and was soft-launched in June 2016, Ramos tells Opalesque. He had always dreamed of having his own pure play vehicle, especially after encountering some success with investments focusing on secular change and its interaction with consumers. The opportunity came up as some people asked him to manage their money and provided initial capital. He now has $20m in assets and is expecting more.

The fund focuses on both value stocks and growth stocks, he says.

The key differentiator of his fund is its focus on companies in industries undergoing enduring secular change, he explains. "Some examples of this could be a shift from cash and checks to electronic forms of payment, it could be pensions going from the defined benefit to defined contribution,......................
