New York manager to launch multi-manager hedge fund to seize distressed commodity opportunity

Argon Capital, an asset manager which opened its offices in New York earlier this year, is preparing the launch of an institutional platform in which in-house portfolio managers will be running separate commodity-centric strategies.

A question of timing Given the state of the commodities market, one might think it is an odd time to launch a fund focused on this sector. Especially since several commodities hedge fund managers have had to close their funds in the last few months.

According to the Financial Times, things were different for commodities hedge funds during the commodities supercycle (during the first decade of the century, following the Great Commodities Depression of the 1980s and 1990s), as they churned double-digits returns then.
