James Alpha favors early-stage managers with staying power

James Alpha Management is a New York-based single-family office, which identifies outstanding early-stage alternative investment managers, contributes strategic capital, and provides them with ongoing operational, management and sales support. One of its principals explains their investment philosophy.

"Over the last five years there has been on average 1,000 new launches a year with many of those falling into the "emerging" category," Alan 'Butch' Andreini from James Alpha Management said during the recent Opalesque West Coast Roundtable.

"Since there are very few firms like James Alpha that allocate to and partner with institutional quality early-stage managers," he continued, "this naturally results in our benefiting from a constant stream of new and interesting opportunities to consider. At the same time, roughly 800 funds close a year, the majority of which opened their doors just a few years before, so we end up having to be very patient when it comes to finding what we view to be a good opportunity."
