Asset management industry in the Gulf still 'embryonic’ and needs diversification

Participants in the latest Opalesque Roundtable found that the asset management industry in the Gulf is nascent or embryonic but holds promise for informed investors. But the region is looking for more diversification for its alternative investment industry as the Gulf takes advantage of secular trends and inflows into the agricultural and gold mining industries.

Hedge fund managers who participated in the latest Opalesque Gulf Roundtable have all agreed that the asset management industry in the region is still recovering from the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis. They said the volatile financial markets brought some setbacks into the regional industry.

The Opalesque Gulf Roundtable took place in Abu Dhabi last month and was sponsored by Van Eck Global and Eurex . Zeeshan Ahmedani, a Partner at the international law firm White & Case LLP, commented, "In the years leading up to the financial crisis there was a lot of overheating and quite a large number of managers starting out had success in raising capital.
