Top UK law firm adds New York, Delaware offices, to focus on investor protection, securities litigation

Thursday, April 19, 2012

Bailey McCann, Opalesque New York:

London-based, Stewarts Law LLP, the UK’s largest litigation-only firm is launching new offices in New York and Delaware. Litigators David Straite and Ralph Sianni will serve as US Partners and Executive Committee Members of the US LLP. The firm represents both individual and corporate clients in a variety of practice areas including investor protection, commercial litigation and antitrust.

The US practice will initially focus on investor protection litigation, including securities litigation, corporate governance and alternative entity litigation, as well as antitrust and commercial litigation.

"We made the choice to add these two offices because it makes sense from a practice perspective," Straite said in an interview with Opalesque. "In the US hedge funds are often set up in Delaware, even if they are operating in New York."

The firm's background in English law may also prove to be helpful as it deals with clients that operate in both jurisdictions or have offices in the Caymans. "It's really necessary to bring a global perspective to cases now, funds are global, investors need protection everywhere," Straite said.

According to Straite, by operating as a litigation only firm, there is no conflict of interest when it comes to client representation. "We aren’t also doing administration, we do not represent banks or auditors and we never will," he says.
