Investors seeking oil exposure through ETCs

Investors are looking for new ways to gain oil exposure without getting locked into a single strategy during this volatile period. According to Nicholas Brooks, head of research and investment strategy for the US-based, ETF Securities group of companies, Exchange Traded Commodities (ETCs) can give investors both strategic and tactical exposure to oil. Brooks was recently interviewed by Sona Blessing for Opalesque Radio.

ETCs give investors the ability to capture performance or serve as a hedging strategy. Options which can be beneficial for investors during a spike in oil prices such as we are seeing now.

Brooks points to the ongoing issues in the middle east as a reason for current oil prices. "From a tactical point of view the key driver of the oil price particularly the Brent oil price is what is happening in the middle east. The other key factor is the global macro area. We've seen a deterioration of the situation in the middle east which has raised questions about supply. The combination these supply questions with global macro uncertainty accounts for its outperformance but will also help us predict how it behaves over the next 12 months."
